For Tennis, I Use Western Grip, What Type Of Serve Should I Use? Right Now, I Use A Spin Serve, Is That Good?
I use a western grip too… BUT you are only supposed to use a modified grip on your groundstrokes! It is imperative that you learn how to use a continental grip for your serve. It will feel very awkward at first, but the fact is that your serve can only develop with a continental grip. Why? Because a western grip will force shots into the net and stunt your swing motion. Not one intelligent person will disagree with this statement. YOU MUST USE A CONTINENTAL GRIP ON YOUR SERVE.
And, you should have both a spin serve and a flat serve. Being able to vary your serve will really help in a match.
When you serve, can you please let it hit the clouds first before you let it land to your opponents side?
For a more effective game normally you have to learn more than one type of serve, to change during the match, and confuse your opponent. get better results.
it depends on your style of play. If you are using a western grip, then most likely you are a clay court style baseliner. if that is the case, your kick (or top spin) serve would be adequate because you are trying to wear down your opponent and keep him or her deep. I would suggest using a variety of serves (slice, cannonball - or flat) just to keep the opponent off guard. the flatter the serve, the less room for error you will have…so you may be gaining a few free points, but will be hitting a lot of second serves.
all of your serves should be made using a continental grip.
I forget the name of the pro but he hit a flat serve on the westernside and after only 3 years of pro, he broke his wrist… Chang is right, you need to pull your hand back and get a flat and spin serve. It will be wierd at first, but eventually it will work out. Once you get those down your spin should most likely be your 2nd serve but mix it up if your opponent is reading you serve…
I personally like flat serves because a strong flat serves are harder to adapt to receiving than spin serves.(for me at least). Try practicing flat.
i have to agree w/ chang. the continental grip is important for serving and volleying. you should also vary your serve. being able to hit flat and spin serves will keep your opponents guessing. i also use a western grip, but when serving i use a continental grip.
