    [(31.50 + b)*.9]*1.05 = 34.02
    28.35 + .9b ) 1.05 = 34.02
    29.77 + .945b = 34.02
    .945b = 34.02 - 29.77
    .945b = 4.25
    b = 4.25 / .945
    b = 4.497 = 4.50
    Balls cost 4.50 before discount. This is assuming we pay tax on the discounted price. If we had to pay tax on the amount before the discount then we’d get a different answer.

    Check it
    31.50 + 4.50 = 36.00
    So take 10% off and we get
    36.00 * .9 = 32.40
    Add 5% sales tax we get
    32.40 * 1.05 = 34.02 .. Correct
