How Good Do You Have To Be To Get A Tennis Scholarship For A D2 School?
I am a junior in high school. I played varsity tennis during my fr. and so. I was number 1 doubles and made it to state every year but I always lose in the first round. I was woundering if I can get a scholarship to play tennis. But I am getting better and I play year around. So do any of you know what are the expections for a D2 or D3 scholarship to play tennis?
Thanks
Sounds like you have a shot at playing at a D2 school. You could probably get some sort of partial scholarship.
You have to be very good and the sport and win all your matches and i mean ALL!!!!! You also have to have great grades in all of your classes.
Mike you don’t say if you are a USTA member or not but I would say take out a 5 yr USTA membership and start playing every tourni you can. Do your best and accumulate as many ranking points as you can. Play singles and doubles. Even though you seem to be a doubles specialist they may want to have you play singles and getting the extra experience won’t hurt either.
Division 3 schools don’t offer scholarships so you should apply to every D2 you can. Good luck.
I play high school tennis (varsity) too and have been offered scholarships for tennis.
Play in USTA tournaments. Honestly, I played in two: won one and was runner up in the second (district rank of 4 afterwards). I did a USTA college fair, played a couple of matches, and had a bunch of interested coaches talk to me.
Rankings really help. You can also try to talk to a college coach, maybe send them a video of one of your tournament matches.
Oh, and D3 will give scholarships, just not athletic ones. If they really want you and your grades are decent, you can get an academic scholarship (happened to me).
The advice about playing tournaments is spot on, this gives the college coach some way of being able to compare you to others. I came over to the States on scholarship at a D2 school, and later transferred to a D3 school where I received an academic scholarship. If you join http://www.tennisrecruiting.net this will help a lot, since most coaches look here for their next players. There are hundreds of D2 and D3 schools, so you have a really good chance, just don’t settle too early because there loads of opportunities. Good luck!
congratulations for making it to state. colleges look for a usta ranking. they barely notice school tennis. school tennis shows that you are an all-rounder which is great, but they want serious players. you should join usta and play national tournaments. you don’t have to be the top but they wont accept any player who doesn’t have a ranking. like andy roddick was the number 1 junior in his age division so he got to play international tennis and junior grand slams. his ranking gave him sponsors and a career.
d3 cant give scholarships, and im not sure about d2 theres alot of helpful info on ncaa.com about this same matter, i just checked it out about 4 days ago and printed off like 50 pages of info, im the same as you, except i didnt play v fresh year cuz my team was soo good we got 4th in state, but i played high jv, but soph i played 2 doubs and we got to semistate, and this year i played 1 doubs and we got all state so i think im about the same as you right now, lookin for a smaller d2 or d3 school
