Please Help With This Math Homework.?

I know this is kind of easy but could someone please explain to me in words how to do this problem
In a state with a 5% sales tax, a tennis racket cost $60.85. What was the selling price of the jacket?
I need the explanation because I have many other questions like this.

  1. The total price would be calculated by
    x + 5%*x = 60.85 (where x is the original price)
    x(1 + 0.05) = 60.85 (factor out x and convert 5% = 5/100 = 0.05 to a decimal)
    1.05x = 60.85
    x = 60.85/1.05 = $57.95 (Since it’s dollars and cents you only need two digits after the decimal)

  2. What you need to do with this problem is work backwards. You need to find the equation. To figure out sales tax you multiply the price by the percentage in decimal form. You don’t know the price, so we’ll use the variable x:
    Sales tax=.05x
    To get the total ($60.85), you then add the sales tax (.05x) to the price (x):
    .05x+x=60.85
    1.05x=60.85
    Divide both sides by 1.05
    x=$57.95

  3. If 60.85 INCLUDES the tax, it corresponds to 105% of the pre-tax price, and so you multiply 60.85 by 100/105 to get back to the price before tax.
    If on the other hand 60.85 is the price BEFORE the 5% tax has been added, then 60.85 corresponds to 100/105 of the tax-included price, and so you must multiply 60.85 by 105/100 to get the amount that the customer has to shell out in that particular State of America.

  4. You know that the sales tax adds to the cost of the item so the original price of it is less than the 60.85.
    Therefore the item cost plus the sales tax = total cost
    price plus price times .05 (sales tax) = 60.85
    or price times 1.05 (your sales tax) = 60.85
    so, replace price with P
    P1.05 = 60.85
    To solve for P divide each side of the equaltion by 1.05.
    1.05/1.05 = 1
    1 times P = P
    P = 60.85/1.05
    P = 57.95

  5. I assume you mean that the total cost of the tennis racket, including tax is $60.85.
    Divide $60.85 by 1.05 and you will get the pre-tax price of the racket. 60.85/1.05 = 57.95
    You use 1.05 since for every dollar of the pre-tax price, you would pay $1.05 including tax. Hope this helps.

  6. well, you know that 5% equals .05 so you need to multiply the sales tax by the cost of the item so 60.85 times .05 equals 3.0425, so (rounded) the taz on the racket is $3.04. so u add that to the price of the racket and get $63.89, so that is ur answer. Hope that helps!!

  7. you need to add the amount of money payed for tax and the cost of the racket.
    to find the price of tax multiply: 60.85 x 0.05= $3.04
    then, just add this to the cost of the racket: 3.04 + 60.85= $63.89
    the selling price was $63.89
