String Tension, Please Help!?
I know nothing of String Tension and Im buying a Tennis Racket Online [Yeah Im a idiot]
I like Lower String Tension just because the strings are a little lose…and I feel more power. So I was wondering if string tension had any significance.
Oh and what should I put for the string tension when Im buying a racket and they ask for one?
Well the tension is really all based on your feel. Generally a lower string tension will provide you with more power, and a higher tension gives you more control.
Loose strings act like a trampoline so most of the ball’s energy is transfered back into the ball, providing lots of power. Tighter strings act more like a “brick wall” when the ball hits them, so the ball squishes flat against the strings for a split second, transfering less energy, and offering more control.
Now before you go and get your racket strung at the lowest possible tension in hopes of adding some power to your shots, you need to look at your options. If you are a smaller more technical player, who already has a lot of control, then a lower tension makes sense in order to add power. If you are a big guy who just sits on the baseline and blasts the ball, then a tighter tension is probably best, in order to add control.
I have been playing tennis and stringing rackets for years now, and when I string my racket, I always do it at 3lbs less than the recommended maximum. So if the range is 55-65 lbs, I do it at 63.
But it really is all about your playing style, and if you are a new player or don’t know what your style is, you can never go wrong by just stringing it at the tension right in the middle of the range.
Hope this helps!
Racquets come with a recommended range of tension, like 55 to 65 pounds. If you like lower tensions, and many people do, ask for 55 or 58 perhaps with this example, or something low in the recommended range whatever that is.
