Tennis Questions?
I’m trying out for my school’s tennis team, maybe if I can a varsity.
I haven’t played tennis in a while but I have gotten back in to it a few months back and am currently taking lessons at a local clinic. I’m a 2.0 player, I am using a prince scream racket with lightning brand strings @ 62 tension. I have a great backhand but I have a terrible forehand and serve. I don’t exactly know how hard I should be hitting the ball, but I have average control of the ball and I can rally about 5-10 balls. I need help on the service motion and tips on how to hit topspin on the forehand side( I already use a semi-west). Any other tips on making my school’s tennis team would be great. Currently I can’t play tennis often due to the weather and I can’t afford indoor courts so if anyone has any suggestions it’d be nice.
The USTA has great video instruction for strokes. They also have exercises that will help you train for tennis. Training and conditioning is just as important as learning the strokes. Practice whenever you can. If you can’t afford indoor courts, try going with a couple friends or other members that are trying out for the tennis team also so you can all split the cost. Don’t give up and work hard.
youtube tennis the hell out of your problem areas. Brent Abbel has a good set of videos for serves. well wait for the weather to get better and just start practicing. go to the usta site and look at their videos on groundstrokes and serves. all u can really do is learn then go out and practice and build up muscle memory. thats all the ground strokes and serves really are. good luck for ur season.
practice the motions with your racket indoors
good luck!
Paul McNamee once said that there are 3 steps to learning how to play well. First there is practicing your strokes, forehand, backhand, volley, serve, cross court and down-the-line.
Then there is learning how to play well in practice matches on the court against fellow team-mates or other people you may train with at your school.
Then there is actual match practice in a competition.
Mastery must be gained in every area, and mastery in one does not guarantee mastery in another. You may win every practice match and then bomb in actual competition against weaker players simply because you haven’t yet played enough.
If you are going to be in a team the best thing you should learn is to get consistency. I am also on a team and the reason why im on varsity is because most of my shots are in. theirs go out. If you are a 2.0 ull have to train hard to get to varsity
